The Székely gate
Short description:
The Székely (Szekler) gate is a type of large gate which is wrought by a uique technique. This type of artifact has evolved from medieval town, castle and manor house gates. From the 17th century onwards the Székely gate type became a real attraction and cultural relic of Székelyföld (Szeklerland) with its distinct carved ornamentation and elaborate decoration. In addition to descriptions and pictorial representations, we can trace the former variations of Székely gates to present day by studying at surviving parts of early examples. The earliest remnants of Székely gates – erected by the Franciscan monk János Kájoni at Mikháza in 1673 - are held in the Ethnographic Museum in Budapest.
